What’s the difference between a Fraser Fir and a Douglas Fir?

Differences between Fraser and Douglas Firs (the two most popular tree varieties in Philadelphia)

Fraser Firs are our most popular premium tree. They feature strong, sturdy branches, silver-green needles, and the best needle retention of any Christmas tree variety. All real trees shed a little naturally, but Frasers shed far less, helping them stay fresh and beautiful throughout the season. They also have a strong, clean, classic evergreen fragrance that fills your home without being overpowering. Their shape is elegant, full, and symmetrical, and their branches can hold heavier ornaments with ease.

Douglas Firs are known for being wide, lush, and full-bodied, with soft needles and a lighter green color. They offer the classic, traditional, bushy Christmas look many families love. Like all real trees, they shed naturally, and Douglas Firs tend to shed more than Frasers because of their softer needle structure — this is completely normal for the variety. They pair best with light to medium-weight ornaments, and have a sweeter, lighter evergreen scent.

In short:

  • Choose a Fraser Fir for the highest needle retention, strongest branches, longer-lasting freshness, and stronger fragrance.

  • Choose a Douglas Fir for a fuller, wider, classic Christmas look with a softer texture.
